What it is

Triglycerides are the storage form of fat. After a meal, calories your body does not immediately need are packaged as triglycerides and shipped through the blood to fat and muscle tissue.

Because they respond to your last few meals and to alcohol, triglycerides are usually measured after a 9–12 hour fast for the most comparable result.

Why it matters

Elevated triglycerides often signal that the body is handling carbohydrate and insulin poorly, and they commonly appear alongside low HDL and central weight gain.

Levels above 500 mg/dL raise the risk of pancreatitis, an urgent concern that is treated differently from ordinary cardiovascular risk management.

Typical reference ranges

Ranges vary by lab and individual circumstances. These are common adult reference ranges for orientation only.

GroupCommon range
Normal< 150 mg/dL
Borderline high150–199 mg/dL
High200–499 mg/dL
Very high≥ 500 mg/dLPancreatitis risk; needs medical attention

Where it comes from

Dietary drivers include sugar-sweetened drinks, refined starches, alcohol, and very large meals. Fatty fish, fiber, and omega-3 fats tend to push triglycerides down.

What can move your result

A non-fasting draw, alcohol in the previous 24 hours, uncontrolled blood sugar, thyroid underactivity, kidney disease, pregnancy, and medications such as steroids and some diuretics can all raise the number.

Frequently asked questions

How fast can triglycerides change?
Faster than most lipids. Cutting alcohol and refined sugar can lower them noticeably within two to four weeks.
Why were mine high when I did not fast?
A non-fasting sample can read 20–30% higher. If your result was unexpected, ask about repeating it fasted.
Do high triglycerides cause symptoms?
Usually none until they are very high, which is why they are found on routine lab work.
