How to read your blood test results
Lab reports are written for clinicians, not for the person the blood came from. This guide walks through how to read one line by line: what a reference range actually represents, what a high or low flag does and does not mean, which panels show up most often, and what to ask your provider. It is educational, not medical advice.

What a reference range really is
A reference range is the span of values the lab sees in most of the people it considers healthy, typically the middle 95 percent. That definition has two consequences worth knowing. First, being inside the range is not proof of health, and being outside it is not proof of disease. Second, about 1 in 20 healthy people will land outside a given range purely by chance, so on a 20-marker panel a stray flag is statistically expected.
Ranges also shift by age, sex, pregnancy, and sometimes ethnicity, and they differ between labs because the instruments and methods differ. Always read the range printed on your own report rather than one you found online.
Six steps to read any report
1. Start with the flags, not the whole page
Most reports mark values outside the reference range with H, L, or an asterisk. Read those first. Everything unflagged is inside the lab's expected range and rarely needs your attention on a first pass.
2. Read the reference range next to the value
A number means nothing without its range and units. 5.3 is normal for A1c in percent and meaningless without that unit. Always read value, unit, and range together.
3. Notice how far outside the range it is
A value one point past the edge of a range is a very different conversation than one that is double the upper limit. Distance from the range matters more than the flag itself.
4. Compare against your own history
Your previous results are the best reference range you have. A value that moved from 18 to 32 is good news even if both are close to the same part of the range.
5. Group related markers together
Markers explain each other. Low ferritin with low hemoglobin tells a clearer story than either alone, and a high TSH means more once free T4 is next to it.
6. Write down your questions before the visit
Bring two or three specific questions tied to actual values. That turns a rushed appointment into a focused one.
